Imminent Departure

While it appears I never fully finished writing about Alaska, I am now outbound to one of my favorite destinations . . . Thailand.  Fortunately, my time spent in Bangkok will be short - a good thing considering the current protests going on there.  It is, supposedly, safe for tourists with common sense but majorly inconvenient.  This trip I will also visit Myanmar (formerly Burma) for a few weeks, traveling with friends for that part of the trip.  Myanmar is an unknown and has recently opened up more to tourism. We are looking forward to visiting Inle Lake where fisherman stand on one foot in long narrow boats and move through the water by attaching a straw paddle to their other leg.  Sounds impossible to me!  I can't even stand on one leg in my living room for very long!  We will also spend time in Yangon (formerly Rangoon), Mandalay and the temples of Bagan (formerly Pagan) which are said to rival Angkor Wat in Cambodia in number and area.  It is said that originally (over 1000 years ago), this area contained over 2,000 temples and stupas and was inhabited by over 100,000 people until it was invaded by Kublai Khan and the Mongols in the late 1200's.
Due to what I hear is exceptionally poor wifi as well as the political situation, my posts may be limited.  However, I hope to catch up in the remaining two weeks of my trip from the islands of Southern Thailand.
